Reasons to Stop Trying To Be SuperWoman
Killing it at work but your stomach is constantly in knots? You have managed to get your kids to every appointment, dance practice and sporting event this month but your hair has been falling out for weeks? You may be suffering from what is known as “superwoman syndrome.” Superwoman syndrome is what happens when a woman neglects her own physical, mental and/or emotional needs to meet the needs of everyone around her. Most women, especially women of color, often find rest at the bottom of their to-do list and stretch themselves thin as they try to juggle the balls of life all on their own. Modern womanhood typically includes juggling being a career woman, a mother, a spouse, a homemaker and many other roles, all with a smile on your face at 110 percent.
Now, although it is true that many of us have figured out a way to wear all of these hats and wear them well, that doesn’t mean that the strain of it all isn’t weighing heavily on our health. Although we may look fine on the outside, studies have shown that women experience depression, migraines and issues with sleeping more than men of the same age. If women don’t learn to rest and say no, we will all surely drive ourselves crazy, if not to an early grave. It is true that our homes and this world need us to keep running smoothly, however sometimes we have to let the chips fall as they may, and take the energy we pour into everyone else and pour it back into ourselves. Remember ladies, you can’t pour from an empty cup, so take off your cape and rest.
